A commercial failure invents a genre
The theory of acid techno wasn't born in a conservatory: it was born from three guys in Chicago reverse-engineering a badly documented machine.
Roland releases the TB-303 "Bass Line": a monophonic synth with a 16-step sequencer, designed to replace the bass player at guitar rehearsals. It sounds "wrong", its programming is cryptic, and it gets discontinued in 1984 after selling ~10,000 units.
A curious antecedent: Charanjit Singh records Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat in Bombay, using a 303 in squelch style before anyone else.
In post-disco Chicago, DJ Pierre, Spanky and Herb J. (=Phuture) buy a used 303 and start turning its knobs in real time. With production by Marshall Jefferson, Acid Tracks is born (Trax, 1987), premiered by Ron Hardy at the Music Box. Sleezy D had already released I've Lost Control in 1986, but it was Acid Tracks that gave "acid house" its name.
The sound crosses to England and explodes in the Second Summer of Love. The word acid describes the corrosive, biting feel of the filter — not necessarily anything else.
Europe hardens the formula and acid techno proper is born: Hardfloor in Germany (Acperience, 1992), Aphex Twin (Digeridoo), Josh Wink (Higher State of Consciousness, 1995 — two TB-303s + a 909 + a distortion pedal), and London's squat/free-party scene (Stay Up Forever, Chris Liberator, D.A.V.E. The Drummer): faster, more distorted, darker.
The 303 aesthetic sits at the heart of modern techno — from Charlotte de Witte's sets (KNTXT) to 303 clones and emulations in every DAW. The original machine trades as a relic.
Anatomy of the TB-303
Understanding acid = understanding what each knob does. The 303 is absurdly simple: one oscillator (saw or square), one resonant low-pass filter, and an envelope that modulates that filter. The "acid sound" is the interaction of three things: high resonance, a fast envelope on the cutoff, and per-step articulation.
Oscillator (VCO)
Saw: harmonic-rich, the acid standard. Square: hollower and more nasal, used for deep or "hollow" lines. Monophonic: one note at a time, always.
Cutoff (filter frequency)
The filter lets harmonics through below a certain point. Closed = muffled bass ("bloop"); open = full saw with bite. In acid, the cutoff is an instrument: it is played live.
Resonance
Feeds the filter back into itself at its cutoff frequency: creates a whistling peak. Pushed to the max, the filter nearly self-oscillates and screams. It is the ingredient that turns a bassline into acid.
Envelope Mod (ENV MOD)
How much the envelope "opens" the filter on each note. Every note produces a fast brightness sweep: that per-note "bow!" or "squirt". It is the 303's signature.
Decay
How fast the filter envelope falls back to its base. Short decays = punchy, gurgling notes; long = laser sweeps.
Accent
Per step: sounds louder and brighter (more envelope, more volume, longer decay). Deliberately misplaced accents are part of the language: the 303 "stumbles", and that stumble is the groove.
Slide (portamento)
If a step has slide, the note glides in from the previous one instead of jumping. Slides between distant notes = howls; between repeated notes = a gurgle effect.
16-step sequencer
The pattern is a row of 16 cells (one sixteenth note each). Each step stores: note, accent, slide or rest. Patterns chain (A/B banks) into longer phrases.
Collector's detail: the "magic" includes circuit imperfections (the behavior of the accent, the sequencer's tracking) that emulators still chase today. Wink puts it well: part of the fun of programming a 303 is "the mistake of what comes out" — even the batteries dying and wiping your pattern is part of the folklore.
Theory of the acid bassline
Acid is repeated monophonic melody: a 16-sixteenth phrase that is everything at once — harmony, rhythm and timbre. There are no chords or progressions: harmony is implied by the shape of the phrase over a scale.
Scale and material
- Almost everything lives in minor mode (aeolian) or phrygian for darkness: root, b3, 4, 5, b7 are the core.
- Interval vocabulary: root ↔ b3 ↔ 4 ↔ 5 ↔ octave. The b2 (or b9 over the root) appears in dark acid as a spice of menace.
- The phrase returns to the root constantly — it is a magnet. Upward octave jumps create tension without leaving the key.
- The root usually sits low (A1–C2): acid's energy is low-end; the "melody" lives in the articulation, not in the height.
Anatomy of the 16-step phrase
- Rests = groove. A note on every step sounds like a machine gun; acid breathes through the empty steps, especially on the off-beats.
- Off-beat accents. The "correct" accent would land on the beat; acid places them on purpose on weak sixteenths (step 7, 11, 14…) so the line staggers.
- Slides. One or two per phrase, never more: they enter as expressive "mistakes".
- Repetition + mutation. The phrase repeats for 1, 2, 4 bars… and mutates ONE element at a time (one step, one accent, the octave of one step). Slow mutation IS the musical form of acid.

Both phrases load in the lab (below) as presets. The transcription is approximate and didactic: in acid, the score matters less than the knob.
The skeleton: four-on-the-floor
Acid inherits its groove from disco and house: 4/4 with a kick on every beat. Everything else is organized around that grid.
- The 303 line locks to the kick. Syncopation doesn't fight the kick: it comes from rests and accents inside the sixteenth grid, not from the bass playing off-beats.
- Swing. Chicago acid sometimes pushes the weak sixteenths by a few ticks (subtle shuffle); European acid techno tends to be straight and martial.
- The drum machine matters: TR-808 (fat and dry, the original Chicago sound), TR-707/727 (the workhorse of 90s acid techno), TR-909 (punchy kick + crunchy hats, the European standard). Today it is all samples or synthesis, but those are the references.

The knob is the composition
In pop music, form comes from new sections (verse, chorus). In acid techno, the phrase never changes: the filter does. Automating the cutoff and resonance over the same 16-step line is the entire narrative of the track.

- Two layers of 303 is a classic trick: one low and tight (sub, closed filter) and one bright and distorted (lead, open filter) playing the same phrase in different octaves.
- Distortion is orchestration: a waveshaper/pedal before or after the filter changes the aggression. Wink used a DOD guitar pedal; London acid lived on cheap overdrives.
- The long 16-bar intros/outros are not filler: they are the DJ's interface. Acid techno is composed to be mixed, not listened to sitting down.
A 303 sequencer in your browser
This is a simplified TB-303 with real synthesis (Web Audio): oscillator → resonant filter with a per-note envelope → distortion, plus the classic drum machine. Everything sounds on your machine, no files needed.
Exercises (in order)
- Find the "squelch": preset A, hit play. Raise Resonance to ~85 and slowly sweep the Cutoff from closed to open. That sweep is the sound that defined a genre.
- Rests = groove: with the pattern playing, delete steps 2, 5 and 13. Feel how the phrase starts to "walk".
- Stumbling accents: put accents only on steps 3, 7 and 12 (off-beat). That is the classic Chicago stagger.
- Staccato vs legato: drop the Gate to 30% (percussive notes), then raise it to 90% with a slide active (a long, howling note).
- Oscilloscope: switch the Drone on and watch the wave as you turn the knobs: Resonance raises a visible peak, a closed Cutoff "rounds" the saw (fewer harmonics), and Distortion flattens the crests.
- The knob as composition: preset D, turn Auto-filter to 0.25 cycles/bar and hear how the same pattern becomes a 16-bar structure.
- Final challenge: clear everything and program your own phrase: root + b3 + 4 + octave, two rests, two off-beat accents, one slide. If it makes your head nod, it is right.
Ten records to learn the language
Look them up on your music service; most are in the "acid house / acid techno" playlists of any platform.
Suggested study path
- Week 1 — Ears: one active listening session per day from the list above, asking "where is the filter closed, and where does it open?".
- Week 2 — Hands: 15 min daily in the lab: transcribe a simple (Phuture-style) phrase by ear, step by step.
- Week 3 — Mutation: take one phrase and make 8 variations, changing a single element each time; note which ones work and why.
- Week 4 — Form: build a 3-minute mini-track in a DAW (Ableton, FL, Reaper or even Audacity for sketches): intro 16, groove 32, breakdown 8, drop 16. If you want to produce for real: the original 303 is very expensive, but almost any clone (Behringer TD-3, plugins like Phoscyon or the free web versions) does the job.
Genre rule, inherited from Chicago: if turning the knob surprises you with a mistake and your body responds, you are doing it right.
